Sardonis Interview (June 2016)

Hi guys! How's it going? How was your flight back home from Kiev? How did it go?

Hi there! The flight was smooth and easy. Our heads were still dazzling from the great Robust fest and we talked about the great experience in the capital of Ukraine.

All right, let's get down to business, when you were going to Kiev to do the show what were you expecting to see?

Well, I know Phill for several years and I follow Robust productions online so I knew he was taking it all very serious, but the whole weekend was beyond our expectations. We expected to have a ‘punky’ organized fest, but instead we played in a beautiful venue with a great sounding PA and people going crazy.

What can you tell us about the RobustFest? We could use some constructive feedback ??

Honestly, if we would be normally welcomed like we were welcomed in Kiev, then we would tour our ass off  It was all organized on an extreme high level and we, as a foreign band, felt very honored. We love Kiev! Ukraine has some extremely talented bands and the fans are very loyal. Nothing but positive vibes going on there! Respect!

Not so long ago, you released your third album. Have you received any feedback yet? How many copies have been sold so far? What does the record label think about all this?

We released “III” on September 11th 2015 via Belgian label Consouling Sounds. They’ve done a great job and we could not be more happy to work with them. Reactions to the album are great. It’s not the some high anticipation when we released “II” in 2012, but we were having a great year then when we toured Japan and Europe with Saint Vitus and Acid King. Nonetheless, reactions to our new album are great and we’re both extremely happy with the album and consider it to be our personal artistic highlight.

As I understand it, your regular jobs won't let you tour as often as you might want to, am I right? Since you did all the shows from your last tour on weekends only...

Yes, we both have dayjobs and other bands too so we have to be very picky when and where we play. We enjoy the weekend shows a lot and prefer those above touring for a week or longer. Also, when we do weekends it’s always fresh and it doesn’t get boring.

Guys, I know you are quite active when it comes to music. Are there any other projects besides Sardonis?

Roel also handles the axe in Hedonist. They recently released their debut full album titled ‘The Collapse’. Besides Hedonist, he also plays guitar in Solenoid and Barabbas. That makes 4 (indeed four  bands.
Besides SardoniS, I also play drums in Bathsheba. We’re currently recording our debut full album which will be released later this year via Finnish label Svart Records.
Check bandcamp, facebook, youtube, iTunes,… for those bands.

We'd like to hear what you think about the physical releases. Do you think they are necessary?

Yes, they are. People in this genre still buy music on cd and expecially on vinyl. If we sell music, we have a certain cash flow to print merch and do tours and shows with a financial risk. Offcourse merch and especially shirts are the biggest income for a band, but cd’s and vinyl are important too.
And you know, people like to have a physical copy of a band after they enjoyed their show. People in this type of music still support the bands and the connection between band and fan is closer than in any other genre.

Tell us about the most challenging show your band has experienced. What happened? What did you do to overcome the challenges?

When we toured Europe in 2010 we played in a Geman venue near the Tjech border. The day after we had to play in Ostend, Belgium. We drove + 1100 km overnight in the nightliner and only arrived 5 minutes before the start of our set. Thanks to the whole crew in the nightliner (18 people) we managed to set up and start in less then 5 minutes. We were so pumped up then we played too fast and our set ended too early

Does the Sardonis have its favorite drink?

As good Belgians we enjoy a fresh pint of beer

Almost forgot! You've recently celebrated 10 years of Sardonis! It's a great anniversary! Congrats to you!

Thanks!

Any other comments or stories you would like to add? Any plans to visit Robust Fest again? We’d love to have you back! ??

For now, we take it quite easy. We have 1 show lined up this summer and we don’t plan on doing a lot more this year since the focus is now on 2 of our other bands with which we’re releasing new music this year.

Coming back to Robustfest would be an absolute thrill. We really enjoyed every minute of the festival and we hope to come back one day. Good luck with Robustfellow, the fest and all other thing you do in life. We would like to greet the people we met in Kiev. Thank you again and stay heavy! LOVE, SPACE & HEAVINESS!

SARDONIS (BE)

instrumental sludge/doom

Another robust gang with their very own take on instrumental sludge doom, this couple is about to play this far in the East for the first time ever in their history - which spans well over a decade! They sure to get a very warm and proper welcome from us, if know what we mean.

ATOMIC SIMAO (UA)
acid jazz/stoner/kraut rock

Having this many amazing bands in Ukraine these days makes us very proud, but also makes it harder to pick all the good ones. Fortunately there are guys who stand out because of their ever-changing nature, going by the name of Atomic Simao. Hailing from Kyiv, first they wanted to play electronic music with a regular rock band line-up, but that changed quickly. With inspiration borrowed from acid jazz, ambient and kraut-rock to name a few, the band will be premiering its new material on Robustfest-2016!

THE CURSE OF WENDIGO (UA)
southern-fried/stoner rock

Representing the third wave of Ukrainian stoner bands, The Curse Of Wendigo had to move from Donetsk to Kyiv two years ago. Add this to the revolving doors of their line-up, and now you know why they're taking this long with a second full-length. But the band is ready to bring their psychedelic grooves for Robustfest's exclusive set, and we can't help being grateful to them for that!

Interview with Sardonis

    Hello Fellas !

First of all I’d like to congratulate you with the Japanese tour with Eternal Elysium.
For many European bands this tour is only a dream.
Was it successful in financial and spiritual ways ?

It was a fucking blast!  Being able to tour Japan was indeed a dream coming true and if a tour turns out to be as succesfull as it was, then you’re living the dream.  All costs were covered at the end of the ride, so financially it was good.  But spiritually is was much better.  The Japanese expected us and embraced us like we were their brothers.  Best tour ever!

Did you explored something new from the Japanese lifestyle ? Any new musical bands that have impressed you during the tour ?

They are so precise and organized it was almost frightening from time to time.  They are detailed too.  A metal guitar player will practice a certain solo until he can play it exactly the same where a European dude will be satisfied if he gets he overall feel of the solo, if you know what I mean.

We were and are big fans of Eternal Elysium, but we only saw them once live here in Europe.  Being able to tour with them and enjoying their gigs every evening was absolutely a thrill.  They are so fucking heavy and put down great shows night after night.  Coffins played a great show in Tokyo too, as well as Nepenthes, a new band with 2 former Church of Misery members.

By the way I’ve tried to find out what does the word “Sardonis” mean and I failed. Can you help me to find the answer please ?

In the eighties there was a very popular weekly televisionshow for kids on the Flemish national television named ‘Merlina’.  It was the cliché story of the good hunting the bad.  In this case a group of detectives were chasing down a group of villains who kidnapped children, terrorized the elder…
The bad guys were leaded by this supervillain named Sardonis.  When we were young and we did something bad, our mama always told us to be nice, otherwise SardoniS would come and get us.  He was the demon of our youth.

What is the main source of inspiration for you when writing new songs ? Do your albums have the same storyline and what all your songs about ?
We don’t want to express a certain story, but the songs breath a kind of bleak, desolate and heavy atmosphere.  I don’t think people think of beaches and cocktails when they listen to our music.

This year was pretty plenteous for Sardonis : 2nd fullength released, Split with Tank 86 and Eternal Elysium. Any plans for future releases/gigs/fests in 2013 ?

2012 was indeed a heavy one.  Three releases, two tours, a lot of local gigs, interviews,… We will take it easier in 2013.  We’ll focus on new songs and we’ll see how it progresses.  We have some gigs lined up in March; 1 in Belgium, 2 in Greece and 2 in Portugal.  Needless to say that we’re looking forward to that.

Don’t you ever thought to release split with close-by-genre-instrumental bands ala Karma to Burn, Sons of Alfa Centauri, Beast in the Field, Le Scimmie… ?

Well, we did a split 7” with instrumental comrades TANK86, but we don’t have any plans right now to do another split release.

What will be your personal recommendations from Belgian and European and World heavy bands ?

Your Highness is a Belgian stonerband that is on the rise.  Check them out, good songwriting!

The film/book/event that has really impressed you in 2012 ?

I don’t have a television and hardly watch any movies or read books.

Electric Earth Recs. (Jelle run it) – was a big success. Sold out titles such as debut albums of Cough, Black Pyramid, Elder, Sardonis… That says that you have really good taste in music and also intuitive feeling what  band will be successful in the future… Why did the label suddenly shut down ? Is there a chance that mighty Electric Earth will rise again one day ?

The label shut down because of different reasons.  I could not combine it anymore with my dayjob and I didn’t want to quite my job because of the financial risk.  My son Thor was born and needed the attention of his father who was always packing vinyls when he was home, so I decided to put the label on hiatus.  There are no direct plans to restart the label in the near future, only time will tell.

Thanx for the answers guys. Any last words ?

Thanks for the interview and interest in our band.  Our website went online recently, so be sure to check that one out at www.sardonis666.be  We’re on facebook too, so feel free to join the brotherhood of SardoniS.  Inhale heavy riffing and praise the Behemoth666!

SARDONIS / ETERNAL ELYSIUM - 2012 - Split CD/LP (Review)

This split was done specially for Japanese tour of both bands during October 2012.
Two of my favourite bands are on this split. Belgian heavy instrumental duo Sardonis is on my watch-list since their debut 7'' in 2008. And Japanese Eternal Elysium is simply the heaviest band in the Universe.  I used to call it this way after that my heavyweight friend set down on EE's 10" vinyl and it didn't get any damage still playing excellent. That's the real story )

So Heavy Riffs are coming...
Sardonis shows us the most epic song from their portfolio called "Ascending".
Slow crawling intro...the good strong riff cuts the fog...It goes further riff by riff...slows down...and punches you faster at the end.
And even keyboard sounds had found their place in this song structure.
If I'm not mistaken this is the first time Sardonis goes for such experiment.
Sounds Awesome !

The second song appears on CD version only and it's called "To the Barn". It starts from the reverse drums and goes with the massive supercharged (guess what ?) riffs.
And it was already released on the wax as a split with holland's TANK 86. (If you didn't heard it yet - you can find it on youtube or bandcamp as well)
And yes, If you didn't heard the latest second fullength by Sardonis "II" - you should do it immediately too.

Turn the Plate and you'll get 2 awesome tracks by Eternal Elysium.
"Unbound (Kai Hoh)" - got slow, dark, doomy atmosphere. Sax at the end also says that this band is widely opened for innovations.
"Circulation (Jun Kan)" - starts with cool bluesy riff and then outgrows into strong, catchy stoner vibe.
"The Spiral Conclusion" is the bonus track for CD edition. Pretty fresh one. It was recorded in 2011 and appeared on vinyl version of  Elysium's "Searching Low & High" that was released also on mighty Hydro-Phonic Recs. Good space passage...

Also I need to mention that Eternal Elysium released new EP that has a name of the theme for Shinya Ishikawa from Big Japan Pro-Wrestling- "Highflyer"

I hope that European fans will have an opportunity to get this EP on some good label. Hopefully this will be released on the wax as well.

Here're you can watch two epic performances of the Jap tour mentioned at the beginning of this post :
