Loinen - 2014 - s/t LP (Review)

Yes there was s/t Loinen album around 9 years ago.
But what we're having here is just another level of violence !
8 sludgy hooks in your semi-rotten body.

While "Parasite" belched different splits, collaborations and experimental "Noisesferatum" for the past times, this piece of sickness was laying on the shelf of Svart Records for several years under the tons of dust. Maybe it was just waiting for it's time. Just like a good aged tobacco.

Without any doubt Loinen got their own style in arts, tunes, lyrics and atmosphere.
And this is pure hell.
and are one hell of hits. I wish 'em to become "radio friendly songs" for every hipster.

You'd better catch Loinen alive while you can.
Each show is unique and never repeats itself.
And yes. Robustfest was a blast

Thank you guys, you were a big part of the fest.

Please Support and grab that LP :

MANSION - We Shall Live CD Reissue on Nine Records (Review)

Honestly speaking - this is not the kind of music that I used to listen to in my everyday life.
But Mansion seems to be really gifted and talented band.
They're coming from Finland. And this is a reissue of 2013 EP "We shall Live".
This piece of art is solid. Starting from the photo set in the booklet, mystic-occult lyrics till the wonderful video for "Slumber Sermon".

Shame on my lazy ass - I've missed this act on Roadburn.
Right now I'm checking the line to the venue where the Mansion is going to play next !

Here're some words from the Polish Nine Recs.
This is their second relese. So they need your support.

"Reissue of cult ep recorded in 2013, first time on cd. The box includes 16 page booklet, lyrics and many previously unpublished pictures.

Mansion hails from Finland. The band name referers to the local Christian apocalyptic “mansionite” cult, Kartanoism, which lived it’s glory days in the 1920-50’s. Kartano is the Finnish word for mansion and is the surname of cult leader Alma Kartano. Mansion is a six piece band brought together to create strong music reflecting the life of the cult’s followers.

Their music it’s a great combination of doom, psychedelic rock and cult rock right out of the 70s. Jess and Ancient Ones, Sabbath Assembly, The Devil’s Blood, Jex Thoth – you know what I mean."

LOINEN Interview (24.10.2013)

Hi, Pekka! How’re you doin’, how’s the weather?

Pekka: Hey man weather is nice. It’s getting cold. I’m feeling fine just been 2 days at Super Massive festival.

You've recently played in Kiev at Robustfest. What's your impressions of the city and the public?)

Pekka: Kiev City was nice. Much bigger than Helsinki where I live. Our driver Artem took us to touring in city which was really nice. Audience at festival was really nice. I did meet few Russians and few locals there and I did get to talk with other bands as well. Robust was cool it’s too bad that you can’t keep that place in future. But I hope festival continues forever!

I know you had some troubles with flight, but still you arrived, and thank you for that. What has happened then and how you spent your spare time? =)

Pekka
: Well, Loinen always has some trouble. We missed flight at Riga because of fog. Riga airport has not much activities so I think we drink few beers there only. Hahaha

How did you meet each other in the band? When did you discover sludge music fot you? And what the hell made you starting Loinen?)

Pekka
: Well, I formed thrash metal band called Malicious Death in 2002 with other guys. GG joined to MD later and we came good friends. Later they had problems with guitarist and I joined Loinen for 1 gig but I’m still here. It's long gig for me. I still don’t know what sludge
is, even people keep calling us as sludge band. I just listen bands and songs I’m not into genres but I guess I like sludge because I’m in this band?

GG: I had early nineties recorded tape from my mate. That tape was Eyehategod "takes as needed for pain" album. That was big reason to start Loinen.

What was the most extreme/worst place where you played?

Pekka
: I don’t know. Usually Loinen makes things for them as extreme, not gig places. We actually don’t mind about the places if things work it’s cool for us.

Recentrly I've listened to your new album "Noiseferatum". I really liked it and I wonder, how did you manage to create such dark atmospheric sound, what inspired you?

Pekka
: Life inspires me a lot. From inner pain and melancholy. Nature and sounds of city things around me inspires. I have few good things in my life and like to keep it that way.

What album/split was the hardest to make and why?

Pekka
: In Loinen most hardest thing is to get things published. We are waiting for a split with Usko to come out and long play from Svart records. Some day some day some day everything goes well but never in Loinen.

How much it’s important for a band to release their albums today on CD’s, cassettes and vinyls?

Pekka
: Well I think most of us want to release our stuff in Vinyl but then again there’s a people that don’t have vinyl players. Most important is that fans get their stuff so that they can listen to it.

The band’s age is more than 12 years already. And there’s a lot of a great job done. What most important moments in your history would you highlight?

Pekka
: For me best highlight in this band was Robust festival. After all travelling to Ukraine and play in festival there and hang around with cool people there.

GG: Robust fest / the first sludge tour with Fleshpress, Stumm, Count Raven and Reverend Bizarre

How do you see yourself in, let's say, 10-15 years?

Pekka
: Old and slow. I don’t see do we change a lot but plans for new songs has made and probably in 10 years lots of faced problems made us more personal band.

What’s your attitude to TV, I don't know how it in your country, but in my country it`is total shit, almost all programs make you stupid...

Pekka
: You’re right. TV programs are boring here too. Movies, gigs, news and sports I like to watch sometimes but series are mostly crap.

Everyone wonders what has Loinen prepared for the next year? Any plans for 2014?

Pekka
: Everyone? We can’t be that big haha. Hopefully more gigs to Europe! We are slow and can’t really so that far. It’s sometimes hard to plan things to next weekend. New album at least should be recorded then.

Do you remember how it all started? Your first metal CD/vinyl, maybe t-shirt?))

Pekka
: I can’t remember how or why or when. I had lots of recorded tapes at home. Some of them now later I’ve collected on vinyl or cd. Early 80’s stuff mostly that’s when all started to me.

GG:  Iron Maiden "Killers" on tape and Motörhead "Ace of Spades!" on vinyl

Every person dreams about something. What’s your dream?

Pekka
: Funny question. Funny because I’ve been lately thinking of this and I can’t find anything that I’m dreaming of. I mean I don’t have things in that good shape so I could stop dreaming. I just don’t know what I want from life. I’ve lost a sparkle perhaps I should dream of dreaming.

Well, that’s all, thank you so much for this interview! We would like to hear some final words to us?

Pekka: Don’t let depression take you down. Don’t let life grind you down. There is shit everywhere and we can’t avoid that. Times like these just recharge your batteries and burst your anger in something creative! Life won’t get better if runaway.

GG: stay slow!!

Baxter Stockman - 2013 - Punter LP/CD (Review)

First time I saw the band named Baxter Stockman on some hardcore gig poster few years ago...
They should play some cool powerviolence from the West coast. That's what thought first.

But nope, the things turned another way...
Baxter Stockman is awesome noiserock band from Finland. They did few CD-EPs, 1 single 7 inch "Romance". And "Punter" is their first fullength record.

Baxter Stockman is the the name of the creepy character from the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" cartoon series who was one third fly, one third machine, one third human.

Usually song starts with the simplest minimalistic riff made by one move of a pick. Following atmosphere going with the same tempo but becomes more complicated.
With the minimalistic sound BxSx achieves raw and aggressive neandertal effect.
That's about the sound. Damn, I really love that wonderful feeling when you invent time machine and go back to early 90s' to catch the pure era of ugliness.
Their music comes right that way.
.

And what I always loved about Finland's noiserock scene is their poster art !

Semtex - 2012 - Sex, Drugs & Sludgecore (LP) Review

Hail the Riff !
Here comes the new LP by the great band from Finland called Semtex.
Firstly I'd like to speak about the package.
"Sex, Drugs & Sludgecore " comes in high quality black cardboard. It's pressed on a heavyweight 180 gr. vinyl. 200 were made.
Sticker and Cool Poster is included.

Musically it goes like an axiom. Semtex = good smoked sludge doom. And like a formula e=mc2 it does not require any proof.
You can feel strong influences of Bongzilla and Weedeater but with the stench from the Northern Finlands' swamps.

This Lp is a compilation of latest works of Semtex. 4 tracks were released earlier this year as a split with Frogskin and DDJ by Boue records.
So If you're a fan of finnish underground music you should grab this one immediately !!!

Also some secret info has leaked away - Semtex are going to release split Lp with Woodrue in winter 2013.

Same 4 tracks also can be heard on this split :

Loinen feat. Paanin Kuoro - 2012 - Mutajazz (tape) Review

Here comes the collaboration between sickest band from the Universe - Loinen and the Jazz musician Paanin Kuoro. Both are from Finland.
Pure DIY Tape limited to 100 copies.
Free/Extreme/Avantgarde jazz covered with GG's brutal vocals.
I like sounds of Sax and Trumpet on this tape that reminds most extreme works of John Zorn (Painkiller and Naked City). And I'm not too much into classic jazz scene but I can compare this stuff to the energy of americans - Mothguts and british band Honey Ride Me a Goat.

Good work done indeed. Sometimes it goes really hard. You can get discomfort, headache together with pleasure while listening to this tape. And sometimes music goes into deep, dark, tribal sludgy atmosphere that Loinen used to discolose on their records.

Here is that smashing effect that every Sludge band  wanna get but it requires a lot of work and deep intuitive feeling how to make things the right way.

Mutajazz is the new wave of non-fresh air.
I hope we'll hear extension in the future.
This work deserves to be released on vinyl.

Stream the 1st track from this tape titled "Gabriel" :

And here's the video of  Paanin's 2011 album "Tony Guyn Pieni Kirkko" :

Sons of Kings - 2012 - Emersion

Atmospheric psychedelic post-rock from Finland

"Emersion draws thick grey lines between borders of alternative music. Meditative psychedelia and spacey soundscapes are both present on this new album which continues the journey of Sons of Kings. The creation is served in two parts, and with even more low frequencies with additional bass player, which renders the original trio into a quartet. The ambitious plan behind Emersion is to connect the dots between soundtrack-like atmospheres, non-typical progressions, kraut-continuity, stoner-fuzz, and post rock mentality. The outcome is, at least, an alternative way to approach the music."

More Good News from Finland...

Demonic Death Judge/Semtex/Frogskin

This split was really big surprise to me! Three greatest bands from the Finland's underground appearing on one piece of plastic. Limited to 500. Released by a couple of mastodont labels. (My math knowledge says to me - 100 copies per label)

1st track by DDJ that opens this book callad "Kneel" starts with Weedeater-like riff and goes straight by the same road. Second one "Beneath The Monument" reminds me old good Iron Monkey's era. And then it turns into more "melodic" stuff with a cool voice-over samples (by EHG's recipe). They're also having a new album out that have a name "Descent". You can stream it in full here. The level of this band grows like a good fertilized weed.

Semtex are cool sounding newcomers. I felt in love since thir 1-st CD-r demo! Weedy tines with sweet/angry guitars ala Bongzilla, Earthride, Hawg Jaw. Think about tatooing your butt/tits (of course if you have a free place on your skin) with next words "In Bud We Trust" ! It will be a good one if you place it next to "Cannabis saved my life" (by the neighbour band Bud Junkies)

http://www.myspace.com/semtexposse

What I really like about Frogskin that you never know what heppens next. Sometimes it goes terribly slow and heavy, sometimes fast as a crusty fuck. Arrgh...goodness. So long awaited 3 new songs since the selftitled LP in 2008. The split with cool canadian Powerviolence/Sludge/Grindcore band Mudlark should be out on 10 inch vinyl like a year or two ago but it didn't heppen. So these three raw sludgy steaks are made of a frog skin. Lick 'em and come to the deep cave trip. Standing on the one step with Finland's own Loinen, Stumm (RIP), Fleshpress.

The volume 1 in the name of this fabulous split gives us a hope that next time we can hear more exclusive tunes from some good bands from some interesting country...maybe Australia or New Zealand, Ukraine, ehh )))...why not ?))).

Full Tracklisting:

1. DEMONIC DEATH JUDGE: Kneel

2. DEMONIC DEATH JUDGE: Beneath The Monument

3. DEMONIC DEATH JUDGE: Feast

4. SEMTEX: Two Minutes Of Rehab

5. SEMTEX: Outcome

Fleshpress: Acid Mouth Strangulation

Fleshpress - 2011 - Acid Mouth Strangulation

Best finnish band ever! New finnish label! They will play on Afterburner and the last Amplifier Worship festivals. That's all that you need to know.
This is gonna be a blast! I hope they will follow 2 EP's that were on Throne Recs. ("Rebuild/Crumble" & "No Return") The most awaited psychedelic underground band for me.

I guess this is the same artist who made Loinen LP cover. It makes me cum.

The release date is 26th of October. And I hope this will go by plan. In other way these guys from the cover will eat the label's boss!)))

"Suffocating home-brewed hypnotic sludge rock from the northern swamps. On their fifth full length album Finnish sludge rockers Fleshpress evolve from their days as a rough, gritty metal machine towards the unknown. These three long tracks ebb and flow with an organic pulse, from slowly meditative passages to black swamp-sludge metal. An unsettling but oddly beautiful experience. "

Woodrue - is fresh band from Finland. They're raw and dirty. that's all that you need to know.

For Sunny sludgy faces...

Sunface ia a fresh band from Finland. Kind of Psychedelic/Sludge stuff. Awesome looking tape.
Kaos Kontrol says so:
"First release from a Finnish band drawing inspiration from the likes of Iron Monkey, Cavity, Weedeater and early Earth. Six tracks of heavy and punishing low-end sludge with raw production, just like it's meant to be. Green tape in green cassette box with full colour sleeve. Limited edition of 100 copies."

Fear of Trolls

Strong Doomy tunes are still coming from the north.

You can catch a cold here or here

Bored to doom

Check these Bored to doom Finland's newcoming band.

Our music is a combination of stoner rock, doom metal and grunge, and therefore we define our music as "Dungeon".

After playing several gigs at clubs and a few small underground festivals, Gniyrg Gnaarg entered the studio in November 2010 to record their first demo. "From Mother Sun", recorded in November 2010 at the MD-studio in Helsinki, consists of four songs and clocks in at just over 40 minutes. The track list is:
1. Awaiting the Sunlight (10:20)
2. Enter the Dungeon (10:02)
3. Earth Fire (10:56)
4. Big Bang (9:14)

The music of Gniyrg Gnaarg has been heavily influenced by the likes of Black Sabbath (esp. Master of Reality), Kuyss, Electric Wizard, early Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Fu Manchu, Joy Division, My Dying Bride and several 60/70s hard rock/psychedelic bands.
