Robust Mass. Episode 2: Ethereal Riffian, SYC (31.05.2015)

Во время 2го эпизода Robust Mass нам хотелось бы пролить немного света на следующюю церемонию:

"Как правило, Пляска Солнца проводилась каждым племенем раз в год в конце весны или в начале лета, когда бизоны собирались в стада после длинных зим Великих равнин — это позволяло прокормить сотни людей, посещавших церемонию. Каждое племя имело свои практики и церемониальные протоколы, но многие вариации имеют одинаковые элементы, включая передаваемые через поколения танцы, песни на родных языках, молитвы, пост. В некоторых версиях Пляски Солнца с целью жертвы Великому духу делались надрезы на коже груди, рук и спины, в которые вставлялись специальные шпильки, к концам которых затем привязывались ремни и прикреплялись к столбу — «дереву жизни», что означало прямую связь с Создателем."

ETHEREAL RIFFIAN - Aeonian (Another Robust Review)

Reaching a Different Kind of Nirvana: Ethereal Riffian’s Aeonian

Oneness. Sensation. Awareness. Not necessarily in that order – these are a few of the track listings you’ll hear when cracking open a portal into Ethereal Riffian’s mesmerizing Aeonian. And like the definition of the title itself, the effect is everlasting – if you’re up for a sonic hangover and a complete submission into enlightenment in the way that only music can achieve.

Edge of Enlightenment

Brooding from the overtones of late 60’s psychedelic meshed with grunge, the band’s second album ascends to an acme of multi-sensual revelations through the ritualistic poundings of heavy metal and otherworldly chant. It’s as if the Gods of Valhalla have become oversaturated with carousing and entered a temple of Tibetan monks, consequently resulting in a beautiful explosion of the universe. If order comes out of chaos, then Ethereal Riffian delivers it aplenty in the hammering dissonance of its grinding chords juxtaposed against the twilight of soft, cosmic sounds. Literary parallel: in The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, William Blake reveals “The path of excess leads to the palace of wisdom” and there is a dark/light resonance of that mantra in this work.

The listener is plunged into an excess of thick sound and delirious vocals in “Thugdam” (Sensation) which transforms into a pulsing, chanting interlude to the next track. After the numbing repetition of the first few minutes, new melodic sequences, a change of dynamics, and the colorful harmonics of acoustic instruments begin to depict a new sequence, fading away into oblivion before the “March of Spiritu” (Rise of Sheol). Ghoulish sounds rise from the ashes of the first track’s inferno, before transforming into a seductive, lyrical guitar heralded by pounding bass and snare – an intoxicating, poisonous line which is then crushed by riotous noise once again. A return to the chanting motif, heavy crashing and whirling in and out of light, fleeting guitar rifts in the upper register make the juxtaposition truly magnificent, almost as if sucking the listener in and out of different dream states. Whatever the incantation, there is a sense of an entire world being discovered, every change sweeping with every key progression and build-up of rhythm and dynamics.

Ethereal Noise

At no time is the album afraid to plunge into head-on fury or celebration. This is not meditation for the meek, and something reminiscent about Dante’s hell lingers here. But this is purgatory, friends, and the heavy-chorded heavens are not far behind.

“Wakan Tanka” (Awareness) weaves a mysterious tapestry of sultry drum beats, mellow, brooding guitar, and a drone-like yet snaky sound that simulates something in between Tibetan chant and a didgeridoo. The first few minutes play around with a few musical ideas, slowly developing the motif and enabling the listener to reach a more meditative state. The drone-like chant is truly haunting, and the power which follows is a sublime climax. Truly celebrating the marriage between the celestial and the human, this is the track that unleashes both fear and beauty, pushing through its cathartic-like growls, moans, and cries before reaching enlightenment itself; the listener has reached their zenith. “Anatman” (Oneness) is a therapeutic come down, healing, fluid yet exuding a strong sense of stillness. It is the meditative state at its most powerful, floating in cosmic ecstasy one moment with the musical silhouette of distant flutes then plunging into power chords and menacing whispers once again. At intervals it ideas seem to reflect a strong Pink Floydian flavor reminiscent of the DarkSide of the Moon era and all its metaphysical, music glory before dissipating into a disjointed, sweaty silence. It truly is an experience to undertake, one which is violent yet tender, wrapped in the lust of excess one moment then divining under purity the next.

After thoughts

It’s difficult to undertake a journey like this and not be reeling afterwards. While each track is substantial in its own merit, it is the album in its entirety which lends to the ultimate sonic aesthetic and spiritual pilgrimage. Ethereal Riffian is clearly going for an experience which transcends the norm and gives listeners something to clamp their teeth on. It’s the kind of album which is more than just about expelling angst, but even discovering components of the self by healing through its many ups and downs that mirror human nature while striving for something higher. There is a definitely therapeutic element of it like Ethereal Riffian’s other works, and like much of related metal/stoner music the potential to carry a universal yet intimate spiritual resonance at liveperformances is great. As a second album, Aeonian encompasses an already developed, mature understand of sound dynamic and concept, yet remains refreshing in its scope.

So shut off the lights, lay back on the floor, and let the encroaching darkness of the room envelope you as you let Aeonian fill your vessel and take over.

Brain Pyramid - 2014 - Chasma Hideout (Acid Cosmonaut)

Да, друзья, в этом году Франция определённо сделала заметный шаг в стоунер-музыке. Очередным ярчайшим примером этого может служить новое творение достаточно молодой и ооочень перспективной группы Brain Pyramid - "Chasma Hideout".

Охарактеризовать двумя словами пластинку весьма трудно, так как перед нами совершенный инопланетный организм с высшим разумом. Он притягателен и загадочен, по настоящему коварен и смертоносен. Семь внеземных композиций предельно зафуззированного сложноструктурного 46-минутного стоунер-джема, космического псих-перформанса и полнейшего отрыва от реальности - вот что ждёт вас!!! Альбом состоит из 7 композиций, каждая из которых по своему уникальна и в тоже время прекрасно ложится в общую картину альбома. Обратный отсчёт начинается с Living In The Outer Space, первой порции перегрузки.

Далее - слегка прифанкованный в начале и уносящий в гиперзвуке в конце Lazy. Landing On The Piramid - кислотный трип, напряжённый и немногословный, набирающий обороты к середине и хлёстко замедляющийся для того, чтобы подготовить вас к встрече с Lucifer - 7-ми минутной потусторонней псевдобалладой, резко меняющей свой темп, пробирающей и атмосферной, напористой и мощной. 

Что можно ждать после встречи с Люцифером? Только его - Twin Headed Giant - энергичного космобоевика. И вновь в дорогу - теперь это 7-ми минутный Into The Lightspeed, безмолвный пронизанный гиперпереходами в подпростанство вашего мозга. А теперь....настала пора финальной композици, 11-минутного посещения чёрной дыры Chasma Hideout. А как мы знаем, из Чёрной дыры нет выхода обратно......Поэтому поверьте,после прослушивания альбома вы никогда уже не будете прежним. И если вы не боитесь изменить себя - не проходите мимо.

Zoe - 2014 - Raise The Veil

В далёком 1994 году в свет вышел кинофильм "Killing Zoe" режиссёра Рождера Эвери. Ну и что, спросите Вы? А то что в фильме главному герою обещали показать "Настоящий Париж". В нашем сегодняшнем обзоре мы не увидим Париж - мы услышим Настоящий французский СТОУНЕР РОК-Н-РОЛЛ!!! Итак,сегодня у нас в гостях парни из группы ZOE и их новый шедевр - альбом "Raise The Veil".

Это третий альбом и он не просто хорош, он ЧЕРТОВСКИ ХОРОШ!!! От альбома к альбому парни прибавляют оборотов, усиливают воздействие на все центры удовольствия до максимума и делают серьёзнейшую заявку в своём жанре!

Альбом состоит из 11 композиций, первую вещичку Kellar's Song вообще можно считать маленьким лиричным вступлением и неким мостиком между Вами и грядущим состоянием аффекта,в которое Вы обязательно впадёте, уж поверьте мне.

Don't Hold My Gaze - заводит с полоборота, с первых же аккордов и ты понимаешь - чары уже не снять!!!! Slam Dance Union и не позволит тебе этого сделать, композиция просто идеальна! Dusty Truck на полном ходу открывает перед тобой дверцу и зовёт - запрыгивай, дружище, помчали!!!!

Пролетя сотню-другую километров, ты слегка притормаживаешь и размазываешься под ударами Astral Projection - нокаутирующего боевика,вывереннного и убойного!!! А за ним уже летит Raise The Veil - неумолимый, быстрый и хлёсткий хит. Roller Coaster Blues - слово "блюз" в названии следующей композиции немного смущает и совсем зря. Средний темп, сочный риффаж и превосходный вокал - второй нокаут!

Но валяться на полу некогда - по пятам скачет оборотень The Wolf - пощады не будет вновь! Нужно успеть посмотреть в зеркало - не появились ли во рту клыки.....Workie Of Te Despair - жёстче и злее, запросто можно потренироваться в слэме или раскрушить что-нибудь ненужное!  
Eternal Boy - хулиган, наглый и задиристый, но в тоже время харизматичный. И наконец, завершающая Time Is Not On My Side - похвальное окончание альбома, шикарный контрольный в голову!!! После ознакомления с альбомом можно сказать с полной уверенностью - ZOE вернулись всерьёз и надолго!!!!!

Gudars Skymning - 2013 - Höj Era Glas

     Сегодня, многоуважаемые мы с Вами вновь вернёмся в Швецию, для того, чтобы вкусить ещё один запретный плод - новый, третий по счёту альбом хард-рокеров Gudars Skymning. 

     Cкажу честно, трудновато описать свои ощущения в полном объёме, особенно если учесть тот факт, что ШВЕДСКИЙ язык я так пока и не выучил....Однако, это один из ЛУЧШИХ альбомов уходящего года, поверьте - завораживающее звучание смеси классического харда образца прошлого века, блюзовых вкраплений и харизматичного вокала с первых же аккордов проникает в мозг и перенастраивает его центры удовольствия. 

     Альбом состоящий из 10 композиций слушается на одном дыхании и практически не имеет проходных вещей. А уж какие здесь встречаются медленные вещицы, воздадим же хвалу Одину!!!! Писать более не вижу смысла, друзья - приобретайте, приобщайтесь и проникайтесь этим чудом от суровых и величавых викингов!!!!!

Biography :

 

Gudars Skymning is a band from the Laplandic woods and mountains in the far north of Sweden. The band get their inspiration from the heavy rock of the sixties and seventies, blues, the traditional Swedish folk music, and the Swedish prog that was big in the seventies. The band thrives on live performance, and even in the studio record the bulk of their albums live!

Gudars Skymning started out in 2006 and recorded their first self titled demo the same year. The band then consisted of Kenny Oswald Dufvenberg, Dennis Sjödin, Tony Östman (Aeon), och Anders Nord. In December the same year a second guitarist, Knut Hassel (Destiny, 7^th Planet), was recruited.

2008 saw the band’s debut album “Dansa tillbaks till din grav” (Dance back to your grave) released. The guys didn’t have a record contract at the time, but things would soon change. In 2010 the Italian record label Black Widow / Bloodrock Records released the album “Mörka Vatten” (Dark Waters) on CD and vinyl.

In early December 2012 Gudars Skymning went down to Stockholm to record their third album, this time as a trio consisting of Kenny, Knut and Anders, with Kenny doing triple duties as vocalist, guitarist, and bass player.

In November 2013 Transubstans Records will release the new Gudars Skymning album “Höj Era Glas” (Raise Your Glass).

Gudars Skymning 2013 is: Kenny Oswald Dufvenberg (guitar, vocals), Knut Hassel (guitar), Magnus Hasselstam (bass), and Dennis Ozzian Sjödin (drums).

Old Man's Will - 2013 - Old Man's Will (Review)

Probably one of the best albums from Swedish scene of this year !

Признаюсь Вам друзья, у меня складывается весьма чёткое ощущение того, что в Швеции творится что-то загадочное. А именно - там уже изобрели машину времени - и неплохо ей пользуются(по крайней мере в музыке). Ярким примером этого является наш сегодняшний гость - группа Old Man's Will и её шедевральный одноимённый альбом. Эти 9 композиций оставят Вам в памяти неизгладимый след,если конечно же Вы любитель творчества таких легенд как Deep Purple и Led Zeppelin. Итак,обо всём по порядку.....

Альбом начинается с композиции Ellington, этакой разведки боем,которая уже даёт понять - здесь будет интересно. Это подтвержает The Cauldron - шустрый красивый хит в хорошем темпе и с приятными лирическими фрагментами.Да,друзья,здесь стоит сделать оговорку, дабы сразу расставить все точки над и - вокалист Benny Aberg это тот самый пришелец из далёких 70-х,впитавший в себя всё лучшее от мистера Планта и Гиллона и приумножающий этот сплав в данном альбоме. Продолжаем....композиция Sea умиротворённо начинаясь,периодически штормит,но не укачивает,а накатывает волны удовольствия. За ней не дав опомниться следует Why Deprive Me ,она красива и величава,но не напыщена.Середину альбома парни отмечают вещью Smidesvals - ослепительной балладой на родном языке.А затем всё раскручивается как тугая спираль - Jugment Day, однозначный и запоминающийся хит со сложной структурой и ритмом,который уступает место следующей бомбе - Evil Woman,немного вязкой, искренней,но в тоже время безжалостной и коварной. Марку держит и An Annobling Evening - покачивание головой в такт незаметно сменяется на шикарное джемовое гитарное соло и дъявольский смех солиста в конце.Финальную черту проводит Alidhem - немного грустная и чувственная, нечеловечески красивая баллада,прощальный взмах рукой и надежда на новые встречи..........

Magnolia - 2013 - Tänk Själv (Review)

Сегодняшний день пройдет под знаком Магнолии - культового шведского коллектива и его четвёртого по счёту творения - долгожданного альбома Tank Sjalv. Чем порадовал или разочаровал этот новый материал? Давайте разбираться.

Альбом состоит из 11 композиций и представляет собой шикарное продолжение музыкальной линии коллектива - да, друзья, перед нами всё та же неувядающая стилистика 70-х, мелодичного гитарного прогрессивного хард-рока с безукоризненным звучанием и отличным построением композиций. Встречает нас - инструментальная Duel Med Djavulen - неторопливая и уверенная вещица с отличными гитарными соло. За ней появляется тяжёлая кавалерия в виде Mr.Harding - жёсткого ритмичного боевичка с приятным припевом. А дальше - добро пожаловать - Idag Sa Bad Du Mig Att Dra слушается уже помягче и полиричнее, не забывая при этом держать хороший ритм. Совершенно другая картина происходит в Ovantat Finbesok - почти джазовом гитарном джеме, стремительном,безмолвном и красивом одновременно, как будто бы парни всегда исполняли такую музыку.

Однако уже следующая за ней Svara Mig возвращает нас к истокам - мы снова качаем головой в такт и отрываемся от земли ближе к концу композиции. Andrum - опять разворот на 360 градусов, молчаливая лирическая, загадочная и немного удивляющая вопросом - а что дальше? А дальше - одноимённая Tank Sjalv проносится мимо Вас на шикарном мощном байке и хитро подмигивает, поднимая столб пыли, из которой проступает Jag Finns Har, плавно и вкрадчиво шепча-а почему бы тебе забыться? Откинься и закрой глаза-я всё сделаю сама! Полёт в нирвану весьма резко обрывает вероломный Dit Vi Gar - фуззовый грув сбивает остатки морока и вновь мы на ногах! А тут как тут Rotterna Gar Djupt - вновь джем,на этот более жёсткий и триповый. И вот она ,последняя композиция Gudinna - красивый боевитый манифест с шикарными соло и логической концовкой. Прослушав альбом целиком и собрав мысли воедино наиболее отстрыми остаются два вопроса - ПОЧЕМУ я не знаю ШВЕДСКИЙ и почему я ДО СИХ ПОР ТАК И НЕ ВЫУЧИЛ ШВЕДСКИЙ? И вопросы эти надо решать немедленно,а как? Для начала - послушать ещё раз!!!!!!

Magnolia's Bio:

The life of Magnolia started in the town of Åmål in Sweden 1994 when Ronny Eriksson started to write his own music. Inspired by the music from the late sixties and the early seventies he recorded his first songs on a Fostex 4-track portable studio. The project was called MAGNOLIA after an old BLUE CHEER-song, "Magnolia caboze babyfinger". Ronny played the bass, guitar, keyboards and sung and the drums was played by Anders "Heda" Hedström. The debut album , "MAGNOLIA" (Trans 021/Transubstans Records), was recorded between 2003 and 2006 (two recording sessions) in Love Tholin’s "Drop out analogue studio" in Åmål. Love who also plays guitar with Jack Vreeswijk (son of the famous Swedish artist Cornelis Vreeswijk) plays guitar on the song "Resa utan slut" (Endless journey). The drums are played by Anders Hedström and Ronny’s younger brother Tomas Eriksson. On the folk music inspired song "Dalsländsk Polska" Carl-Fredrik Eriksson is playing trombone.

Second album, "FALSKA VÄGAR" (Trans 038/Transubstans Records), is recorded between late 2007 and early 2008 in the same recording studio as the first album.
In 2010, they released their third effort ”STEG FÖR STEG”, once again on the Transubstans label,
and now they return with the eagerly awaited ”TÄNK SJÄLV”!

The music of MAGNOLIA contains lots of improvisations and have the roots in the bluesbased progressive rock music a la CREAM, NOVEMBER, WEST,BRUCE AND LAING, HIGHWAY ROBBERY, MOUNTAIN and their likes. The lyrics are all sung in Swedish for the right feel! Hope you enjoy the world of MAGNOLIA!

BAD GUYS - 2013 - LP (Review)

Lock-up your daughters & beware of four macho bastards. Bad Guys are coming...

I remember old good days when it was possible to find some cool bands on myspace (before the shitty upgrade). Few years ago I followed the link from one gig. That was the first time when heard the band with the simpliest name ever - Bad Guys

Few months ago I found that UK's finest noisy label Riot Season is going to release their debut LP.  It seems that  BG is going to be the most rocking release up to date on the label.

 Start listening to the record...and dozens of hurricanes with fresh air are flowing through my ears.

Really good job done over the recording and mixing of the sound.

Bad Guys had found their own way to the top of the mountain of success :

most songs starts with the supersweet guitar sound intro which grows up into a smashing bulldozer of heavy rocking vibes. Smart Lyrics and harsh drunk-driven vocals is what makes Bad Guys freakin' special !

While listening to this record you can find tonns of influences starting from 70's heavy rock till the 90's noiserock and 00's riff rock.

 Just press the "Play" button and Bad Guys will make your evening.

Fuck any comparsions, but if you insist : ZZ top, Harvey Milk, Torche, Lords (UK), MC5, Nashville Pussy, The Jesus Lizard ... and all the things that's fast, heavy and dirty.
Dig this if you love dogs & hate sea foods and kids.

Without any doubt this wonderful band is better listening live.
