This is ain't Doom band as you can think first after reading the name. The Hari Karaoke Trio of Doom is instrumental freejazz duo from New York. Lots of practice and good music taste that's what you can feel in every note of this fabulous disk. Really cool work just to spend your evening relaxing after hard working day.
Best listened when cleaning the snow from the footpaths in your backyard...

The leaders of the oddly named duo, Kansas City-based percussionist D. Hitchcock and New York guitarist Sal Cataldi, first outlined their recombinant genre research on the 1998 cult smash "Escape Velocity" (Bad Egg 001), a jazz-inflected/noise & dub fueled flight for the chill out room featuring star turns by the likes of Eno/Brand X bassman Percy Jones, today also being reissued as a digital-only release. This uncategorizable indie garnered raves from all edges of the cognoscenti universe including The Village Voice (“truly excellent… where Miles meets Midi”), Jazz Times (“an interesting potpourri of styles and spacious ambience”), Alternative Press , Aquarian Weekly (techie gorks, a free-funk direction reminiscent of Last Exit or Sonny Sharrock’s soundtrack to ‘Space Ghost’), CMJ, Fantastic Voyage System (“marvelous head candy, an all-out trip fest”) and Fact Sheet Five (“part jazz, dub, funk, industrial and experimental, way more exciting than 99% of the music being released these days”). The disc earned airplay and chart positions on more than 75 college and community radio stations nationwide. With their way too tardy, years in the making follow-up, "Gealago," HKToD heads upriver for even darker sonic realms, where machines battle to gain control of human emotional content and people struggle for machine-like beauty and precision.

This is no Space Age Retro Lounge get up; this is The Future Now - from rub-a-dub flute-flavored Blaxsploitation funk and frenetic electro-bop improvs to tribal drum sonatas and delicato acoustic guitar madrigalry. It’s all corralled in an uninterrupted cinematic flow, in multi-sonic-grains ranging from high-rez digital Carnuba to purposefully low-fi/hi-life Fostex primitivo. The band’s efforts redefine the notions of "post rock" and the standards for judging and comprehending harmolodic-rhythmic information. Fittingly, the Trio debuted much of “Gealago” amid the International Noise Festival at NYC's The Knitting Factory a few years back before maybe a little too leisurely committing it to the digital coil, even engaging LaMonte Young in a high-flying duel of pitched drone-n-bash.

Concert report: Kylesa + Circle Takes the Square + KEN Mode at Blå, Oslo, Norway, 09.02.2012

If you happen to be in Oslo, Blå is a very nice place to visit. Especially on Sundays, when it's flooded with young girls, listening to a local jazz band. I've been to it several times and liked the place, so I was very glad to find out that Kylesa was coming again to Oslo, and exactly to this cozy venue.

I bought the ticket in advance, and that proved to be a right thing to do, because the concert was sold out. No wonder, Kylesa is very popular here in Norway; since I moved here in 2009 they've already visited us 4 times, and I suspect they have had more concerts here before. This was going to be my third live Kylesa experience. The first was good, the second was better, so I was preparing to a very remarkable happening this time.

I came a little late, when Canadians KEN Mode were finishing their show. Now I really regret it, because I really liked their two songs that I heard. They reminded me about Knut, it sounded very similar to that Swiss mixture of sludge and post-hardcore tunes, which is a big plus for me -- I'm a fan of Knut. I wish I came earlier and had seen more. Thanks to Kai Mauseth, who visits and films most of the relevant concerts in Oslo, we can grab a small piece of the Canadians' performance. And the next time I'll definitely jump at the chance to see these guys live again, the full set.

The next band to enter the stage was Circle Takes the Square. Well, I can only say it was definitely not my cup of tea, so I hanged in the back of the hall, far away from the stage, and I can't say that I actually have seen them live :) At least I heard them. And for those who want to see and hear -- here goes the video again.

Actually, hanging in the back of the venue had its advantages. Laura Pleasants from Kylesa was standing just at arm's length from me, having a conversation with somebody who looked very similar to Kvelertak's guitar player, and I think another Kvelertak's guitarist was also hanging around. It was a little surprising to discover that Laura is so miniature and Kvelertak's guys are so big. You can't tell it from seeing them only at stage.

At some point Laura said "Sorry, I have to go now" to her companion and I understood, that the time has come. I moved close to the stage and got ready.

Presently they entered the stage, guitar players (and simultaneously vocalists) to the right and left, the bass player in the center and two drummers in the back. Kylesa was the first (and it seems the only) band with two drummers that I've heard, and it still amazes me, and it is still fascinating to see two drummers' synchronous work at the stage.

I said I was preparing to get the maximum from the concert? Well, I did it! It was not hard with such a band. I really like when the band enjoys the show itself, when the musicians are moving and jumping and not are standing still. And Kylesa is the band that really enjoys playing! No surprise the audience at their concerts is rapidly infested by the energy coming from the stage and begins to move, jump and scream itself. And I was also moving, jumping, screaming aloud the words of the songs from "Static tensions" and "The Spiral Shadow", as well as the people around me. There was even some crowd-surfing -- the thing you don't often see at concerts in Norway.

I wish the concerts like these could last forever, but eventually the band played encore and it was done. I relocated to the exit from the stage by then, and I saw band members passing beside me, exhausted and covered with sweat. Nothing else could testify better for the fact that Kylesa is one of the best live bands I've ever seen.

So there was time to leave for home, but not before I bought "Static tensions" on vinyl. And on my way home I thought, that every Kylesa show that I visit is better than the previous. I don't know how, but they simply become even more and more perfect live. So don't miss them if they come to your town. I'll not miss for sure.

This is ain't bad band....this is a good band...

First of all I want to say that being a totally underground band Stasis sounds really original and interesting.

This cave is worth diggin'. These Mammoths came from Maine, Portland, US. The band was formed in 2004. They have rleased 3 demos and 3 EPs named by the colour (Red, White and Blue). They've also appeared on the compilation "The Stranglers Chapter 1" on the Canadian's finest Choking Hazard Label.

Back to the record...

The album starts with two soft psychedellic tracks. This just preparing you for a long sludge journey.

Then you jump into hellfire of good-laden sludge/doom with some cool/non-ordinary experimental parts.

It's so hard-to-find all the music, composition and heavy jazz jams. So the better recommendation for you - to listen to this masterpiece at least twice.

If you're into brain feeding frequences - Stasis is the best recipe for it.

Don't forget to catch the limited re-edition of Stasis' 2nd demo "We are falling Upwards" on Dethroned records (darker division of throne Recs.)

Before I've started writing anything, I'd like to give you a warning. The CD which I will review here is highly addictive and if you're afraid of listening to the same CDs over and over again - you'd better stay away from this, and close your ears every time you hear 1000mods' riffs anywhere. For those of you who don't have such fears - I'll continue.

The debut LP record by the Greece stoner-rockers (or jam rockers, or just excellent rockers) 1000mods is called "Super Van Vacation", and that's the name behind one of the best records of 2011 in my opinion. Here's a couple of things you should know about this record:

- It was produced by Billy Anderson (Sleep, Acid King, Weedeater...the list is impressive)
- It's played in drop C guitar tuning - the best damn tuning, to create a massive, heavy wall of sound
- It's conventionally divided into 2 parts - straightforward rock and jam oriented songs (a little bit more than 65 minutes of speaker destruction)

A couple of words about the atmosphere of the record. Well, it might be just my opinion, but it feels to me mostly like a desert. Silent, burning, stormy, wild, merciless, slow, cold - these characteristics describe it's condition at different times, as well as the music of the band in different moments.
1000mods is a truck full amps and testosterone which is crossing this desert. And I am more than confident that they will cross it in spite of everything.

Speaking about the music itself. Musicians use the kind of approach I very much like myself - they take the traditional components of the genre and try to expand it - in their case compositionally and with help of two guitars (there are much more opportunities to express the different shades of music in such a way). The opening track "Road to Burn" starts with one of the most addictive riffs of 2011. This tune if full of bad-ass slow rock. The tempo doesn't seem to change throughout the song making you shake your head for almost 9 minutes. The next two tracks ("7 Flies", "El Rollito", "Set You Free") aren't slow at all. Time to remind that classic stoner-rock (think of Dozer, Atomic Bithcwax or Kyuss with a flavor of Alabama Thunderpussy). Above all I like the moment in El Rollito when solo-guitar's melody unites with singer's voice - awesome!

The following track "Vidage" sounds like an instant classic. Open's with sweet Kyuss-like melody and ends with a guitar duel-jam. As of the next opus - "Navy In Alice", the part which starts on 2:46 is the deal! Delay flavored guitar soloing is going to take you far away until the last note fades out. The rest of the album mostly refers to the part of the album which I called more jam oriented ("Track Me", "Abell", "Super Van Vacation"), except for the mid-tempo rocker "Johnys".

Resume: 5/5. Bravo! This is a record I'm proud owning, and this is an album which I will recommend among the top-5 stoner-rock albums of 2011. What I strongly advise you is to buy band's CDs, go to their shows, and support them in any way possible. They're working really hard to provide you with the best music they can offer, and they deserve to be heard. By the way, judging form YouTube videos their shows really slay so don't miss them playing!

G.U. Medicine are a tight gang of hard drinkers who also play heavy rock music at high volume for fun.

Formed way back in 2003 amidst a common love of drinking and rock music, G.U. recorded their 1st L.P in 2004 released through the excellent Undergroove label. Imaginatively titled "G.U. Medicine", the album received rave reviews in the music press both in the U.K and elsewhere. Like-minded drinkers/rockers were quick to jump on the (badly driven) bandwagon and The Medicine recorded sessions for BBC Radio 1's Rock Show and Ian Camfield's XFM show.

GU Medicine - 2004 - GU Medicine

Veterans of the road G.U. have rocked up countless U.K and European tours with the likes of The Wildhearts, Nick Oliveri and his Mondo Generator, My Ruin, Open Hand, Viking Skull, Skid Row, Year Long Disaster, The Almighty, Left Side Brain and probably some more that they've forgotten about due to the beers. Picking up fans, broken-down vans and hangovers along the way.

In 2006 the band released their 2nd long player, "Saints of Excess" which was again hosted by the mighty Undergroove label. Again critical acclaim followed and the band recorded two videos to accompany "A Meeting With Foul Play" (Directed by Rod Thomas) and "Saints of Excess" (Filmed on tour with The Wildhearts in April/May '07). The 'Foul Play' Video won the New Blood competition on the Scuzz music channel with an amazing 48% of the viewers vote.

GU Medicine - 2006 - Saints of Excess

The band's 3rd album, "Lords of Oblivion" was recorded throughout last year with shit hot record producer and gifted lover Jason Sanderson. Imagine an immense iron bar travelling at just under the speed of light through a vast and immeasurable slab of molten granite. Now imagine the sound that that would make. You're getting close. It's due out sometime soon on the ever-awesome Undergroove label.

This split was really big surprise to me! Three greatest bands from the Finland's underground appearing on one piece of plastic. Limited to 500. Released by a couple of mastodont labels. (My math knowledge says to me - 100 copies per label)

1st track by DDJ that opens this book callad "Kneel" starts with Weedeater-like riff and goes straight by the same road. Second one "Beneath The Monument" reminds me old good Iron Monkey's era. And then it turns into more "melodic" stuff with a cool voice-over samples (by EHG's recipe). They're also having a new album out that have a name "Descent". You can stream it in full here. The level of this band grows like a good fertilized weed.

Semtex are cool sounding newcomers. I felt in love since thir 1-st CD-r demo! Weedy tines with sweet/angry guitars ala Bongzilla, Earthride, Hawg Jaw. Think about tatooing your butt/tits (of course if you have a free place on your skin) with next words "In Bud We Trust" ! It will be a good one if you place it next to "Cannabis saved my life" (by the neighbour band Bud Junkies)

What I really like about Frogskin that you never know what heppens next. Sometimes it goes terribly slow and heavy, sometimes fast as a crusty fuck. Arrgh...goodness. So long awaited 3 new songs since the selftitled LP in 2008. The split with cool canadian Powerviolence/Sludge/Grindcore band Mudlark should be out on 10 inch vinyl like a year or two ago but it didn't heppen. So these three raw sludgy steaks are made of a frog skin. Lick 'em and come to the deep cave trip. Standing on the one step with Finland's own Loinen, Stumm (RIP), Fleshpress.

Sigmun (Indonesia) - 2011 - Land of the Living Dead

The second Stoned band after the Komunal that I've heard from Indonesia. 2 good Songs.

Descriptive paragraph/bio- Loud is an Indonesian rock band formed in December 2008. Consists of Haikal Azizi (vocal/guitar),Nurachman Andhika (guitar), Mirfak Prabowo (bass) and Risyad Tabattala (drums). Mainly influenced by the two founding fathers of heavy metal, the almighty Led Zeppelin and the god of heavy riffs, Black Sabbath. Loud mentions their music as freud blues rock, the word freud comes from the infamous neurologist, Sigmund Freud, whom they admired so much for his unconscious mind and the defense mechanism theory. They believe that the music they make are coming spontaneously from their unconscious mind. They changed their name to Sigmun after some issues about the similarity of their name with an english hard rock band, which was formed in 1989. the new name of course also came from the wicked neurologist himself. Referring to their influences, most of their songs are based on riffs covered with distortion and overflowing echoes. They describe their sound as "bringing a high gain amplifier and drums into a cave". the basslines are almost progressive but raw and primitive at the same time, the drumming moves fierce and violent on high tempo and in a sudden could turn calm into a drowning bluesy beats, while the vocals sounded like chants and moans, obviously affected by Plant and Ozzy . while they altogether religiously worshiped the Zeppelin and the Sabbath, each member also have their own musical background. mirfak have always been a fan of the grunge god Nirvana, the highspeed aggression of Motorhead and anything masculine, while nurrahman is a heavy metal geek who embrace the holy father Dio , Iron Maiden and the uncanny Uriah Heep. haikal adores the psychedelic echoes and progressions of Pink Floyd, the complexions of Robert Fripp and the zestful spirit of Jack Whites screech, risyad on the other hand has always been a disciple of Johny Rotten and the likes of raw punk rock, also highly toxicated by heavy local acts such as Seringai and Koil. their interest in sigmund freud concepts of unconscious mind and their love for the whimsical world of surrealism are evidently showing in their lyrics. enjoying the exploration of absurdism and juxtaposition in their writings, Dali, Magritte and Chirico might have influenced them as much as Page and Iommi did, paintings made out of hazy poetry and heavy echoed chords. they might say that the lyrics are mainly about human nature and social life, but then again who could ever guess what's behind their unconscious mind?

Hail Sweden! Here comes One Inch Giant. Powerful, strong stonerrock filled with good classic riffs. I've listened to this album for one breath. Just one melodic ballad and the rest is a groovy massacre. The British band Grifter says - "Simplicity of the riff is key". And I think this is the answer to the tons of hard questions ))). Name of the band for sure comes from one Kyuss song (guess how it's called?))) And my favourite song on this album "Feed the Fire" starts from the Blind Dog's riff...aarrghh sounds awesome. I need to buy a motorcycle !
"Echoes in the night" and "Treasures that betray" rock my lazy bottom since last weekend.
Recommended to old riff-rock lovers (Blind Dog, The Mashroom River Band, Zebulon, Kyuss)

Portugese stoner/ post metal duo Lesbian Rainbows has recently filmed a jam trip.

The Holy River is the name of a 4 track jam trip performed and recorded in an old abandoned house lost in the middle of the forest, riverside. The first two videos are now available and the other ones will be unleashed very soon. The name of the session is an invocation of the purity and mysticism of this place along with a revisitation (both aesthetic and conceptual) to Alejandro Jodorowsky's filmography (The Holy Mountain).

Andre (Drummer) is also the musician behind the Valse Sinistre Records’ (aura).

"We are "THE BLISS".A music trio from Piraeus Greece.We were formed in 2000 and we create music together ever since.About one year after we got together,we recorded our first demo,"BODYCODE" (2001)and after one more year our second demo recording,"ASSEMBLE"(2003).Our past influences stemmed from the early scene of Seattle,back in the 90's.Through the years,our inspiration started to become more complicated and our influences derived from various sounds and patterns that you find in greek traditional and other kinds of progressive rock bands.During that time we participated in two compilation cd's (IN THE JUNKYARD vol 2.,IN THE JUNKYARD vol 3.)released by Spinalonga records which is a non profit label organized by the bands,in Athens.All these years we've been performing all around our country,in small and big festivals,and sharing the stage with small and even bigger bands such as NIGHTSTALKER,EARTHBOUND,ECHO TATTOO,PLANET OF ZEUS,LUCKY FUNERAL,DEUS EX MACHINA and many more.Also we were the openning act for FAITH NO MORE reunion in Athens,in 2009.Meanwhile,we were experimenting and recording new material for our debut album "GABBATHA".In the mean time we are really interested in finding ways to promote our music by touring around the world and also seeking for an interesting deal with a record label."

Hey Hey Hey, Doomanoids!

The Robustfest vol.1 ended almost 2 and a half weeks ago, but I still have a wonderful feeling about all things that we have done.

Huge thanks goes to all the bands that have played during that beautiful day, all stoned ladies, doom-heads, hardcore kids, security-bikers, veganburger makers, tickets & tokens selling girls, drunk barmens...whoever you are and whatever you wanna be called - We Salute You !

It was a fabulous experience for everybody from the Robust Crew. And I hope that most of guests were pleased too.

I'll try to make a small review about the Robustfest action :

More than 150 people have bought the tickets, so it's not actually bad for the first time, erh ?)
And if you add 70 people from bands & robust crew - there will be a good number !
The fest started with the delay in just 20 minutes. In the middle of the fest the bands came to the original Schedule by themselves. Every band had good self-organization. So thanks again to them for such a strain.

All the bands were amazing by their own way:

Slow Ride Home opened the festival with the shine of the sun. Great Instrumental vibes.

Kiev's Bluesbreaker punched the publick with the good dose of oldschool hc mixed with catchy bluesy riffs.

Bomg from Monastyryshe, UA was a biggest surprise to me. Slow & Heavy. Fabulous Debut of father/son/Electric Wizard collaboration. These Guys will have a good future in records and live shows for sure.

Stoned Jesus - great & artistic as they are.

Forever Wasted - ugly and dirty, just the way it should be. Sludge is a word. Begotten movie on the background was terribly strong )

Torn From Earth - were absolutely smashing. Heavy, slow/intence vibes in your face.

Ethereal Riffian - I was so glad to watch and listen to ER for the first time. Great artistic debut. Wonderful percussion, Dejiridu (australian tube), black robes, 3! smoke machines, special lights, Stonezilla's intence guitar work, Shamanic video made by SAF (Hope you'll get a better screen on Redburn), the guys made really hard work prepearing this festival. Hug you all for yor blasting first time appearence !)))

Kamni - Good people & excellent, expressive musicians. I can watch them live forever.

Tombstones - I'd better say - "no comments" doomy tunes. You've saw 'em by your eyes, heard 'em by your ears. If not - you'd better punch yourself. Cool guys with a great sence of humour.

Currently we're thinking about the next volume. We wrote and underlined all the mistakes and shortages about the organization, so next year there will be less of them.
Nobody knows how the things can turn next year, anyway we wanna keep the same place for the fest & bring that great friendly DIY feeling for the next event. Maybe moving dates for early week in September. Maybe 2-3 days. We'll see later.

Amarok (US) offers you to look into the eyes of the abyss. The four from California has came up with a self-titled EP in 2010, and a vinyl LP. Sludge/doom with drone and psychedelic elements at it's best. Think of Finland's sludge finest Frogskin meet US monsters Cough sometimes combined with Dopesmoker-like riffage (EP's first track), and top notch psychedelic solos & drones. Death/doom touch is felt as well (2nd track).
That like misery sounds like.

The band has recently did an entire US tour where they have shared stage with Samothrace, Floor, Weedeater & Cough.

Don't miss them playing and be sure to buy their upcoming releases:

One of the most essential debuts on the sludge/doom scene during the last two years in my opinion. Keep an eye on them.
